The Calm in the Storm

As I drove over to Kaufman, Texas a few weeks ago to attend a ladies conference, not being very familiar to the area, I put the information into my GPS and headed off into the land of the unknown, (said with a little laughter).

As I rode the hi-ways I was keenly aware of my surroundings. Everything looked so green and healthy. The sun-rays beaming down on the green grass gave it an added burst of life. It was interesting to say the least, as the day before I was convinced I would not be able to attend due to the severe storms in our area. It had been dark and dreary, and had us under tornado warnings.

As I’m thinking about the night before and the storm; I was reminded of the small tinge of anxiety I had listening to the strong winds and rain coming at us but I was quickly reminded I had the faith to believe the storms to be stilled.

No, I’m not Jesus, and no, the storm did not cease or rather the storm outside my house did not cease, but the storm within my spirit became stilled, so much in fact I went to bed and slept straight through the night.

So, as I am driving and pondering about this I think to scriptures that related to the storm the disciples had been in, and naturally center my thoughts on Jesus and him being in the boat with them.

Of course I have to pull over to read the scripture but in Matthew 8:23-27 it reads: and when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?”

Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Could you imagine?

Now, I’m not a huge fan of the open waters although I will go in a boat, but I wondered about the disciples being on that boat, out in the water, away from the land and this massive storm raging around them. It’s not hard to sense how anxiety, fears and the uncertainties of what might happen to them would envelope their minds.

But Jesus interceded for them causing everything to be stilled, causing everything to be calmed.

I believe life storms threaten to sink our faith everyday. I’m not talking about every day inconveniences like a flat tire or a challenge at work.

I’m thinking on the difficulties that cause us to question God’s goodness.

Maybe it’s an illness that continues, or maybe the loss of a loved one, what about when a loved ones loses their way? What about a marriage that has been destroyed and maybe in it all, you believe God is asleep.

Or, you could be thinking; if God really cared, if he really understood, then he would stop it from happening.

There are many opportunities in life that provoke us to question our faith, question God, and there are some answers we may never get until we reach the other side of heaven.

However, I do believe there is an answer to every detail of our lives in scripture if we dare to just search.

Even if you don’t get the answer in the moment, what I do know, is if we keep our eyes upon him, if we continue to trust Him, if we press in through our fears, our anger, and our disappointment, if we will press through the storms in our lives He will calm them within us and give us a peace that surpasses all understanding.

  1. Ahh, yes, we are flesh, and the flesh is weak, and is always being tested, with free will we have to make a choice…. Good read, Thank you!

About Me

My name is Kim Brasher. I started writing back in 2015 not ever really believing I would go any further than just encouraging myself. As I have grown in my relationship with my Heavenly Father, I discovered writing is a gift I have, and as I began to share it with others the Lord encouraged me to go wider with it.

Thoughts to Ponder are just that, something to meditate over, something to consider. How does it relate to you? There is no right or wrong in your answer, we are all on a journey and we each grow differently at different places.

My prayer is that you will be blessed by reading and may you become encouraged. Please feel free to leave your feedback, as it is always welcomed.
